Who Is The King Of Poker? $7 Million Up For Grabs At Commerce Casino During California State Poker Championship.
Annual California State Poker Championship draws the best in the West. The 2008 edition of the Cal State Championship will again be a hotbed of No Limit and Limit Hold'em poker tournaments commencing on Tuesday, September 2, at Commerce Casino in Los Angeles. This year's 18 events, with buy-ins ranging from $120 to $1,580, will likely draw leading Southern California players and some national stars. The estimated prize pool for the full 20-days is expected to be $7 million, with over $300,000 going to the winner of the Main Event that begins on Saturday, September 20.
"The Cal State Championship has developed quite a reputation," said Commerce Casino Tournament Director Cheri Dokken, "It might be because the tournament was won previously by actor Ben Affleck, or because top-notch talent shows up each year, or maybe it's the prestige that comes from winning a big tournament at the world's largest poker room. Whatever the reason, this is one of Commerce Casino's largest yearly poker events outside of the L.A. Poker Classic."
The highlight of the 2008 Cal State Championship will be the $1,580 buy-in Main Event. Last year it was Eric Crisp who beat nearly 360 challengers to win $324,815 at the Final. The year before it was Pasadena's Lance Allred who took home a $345,470 paycheck by besting 420 other players. In 2005, Hieu "Tony" Ma of El Monte surpassed 215 players to claim a $384,025 prize.
Other special events scheduled for 2008 include $335 buy-in No Limit Hold'em games on September 6 and September 13 with guaranteed prize pools of $200,000 and rebuys up to three levels. There is also a special No Limit Hold'em Deepstack event planned for September 7 where the buy-in is only $120, but poker players begin the game with $4,000 in chips. For a change of pace on September 12, the Cal State Championship will host a $335 buy-in H.O.R.S.E event. And of course there is always the last chance Super Satellite Day, being held September 19, where players can wager as little as $190 to win their way into the Main Event.
Single table satellite games for the Cal State Championship begin at 11 a.m. on August 28. Players need not be residents of California to participate in the State Championship, but you must be at least 21 years old. All tournaments begin at 6 p.m., except for the Main Event which has a 2 p.m. start. Events with 100 or more entries will be played over 2 days.
